OSGi Alliance Adds Five New Technology Innovators to Support SOA Strategies

TMCnet Contributing Editor
OSGi Alliance, an association of technology innovators that promotes valuable cross-industry ecosystem, has reportedly added five new members to support its service-oriented architecture (SOA) strategy, in line with its recent application market initiatives.

The OSGi Alliance is a standards body that specified Java-based service platforms designed to be managed remotely. OSGi service platforms serve as a key component in Java systems.

The five new members of the alliance are BEA Systems (News - Alert), Jayway AB, Interface21, Eclipse and IONA technologies. BEA Systems is a global leader in enterprise infrastructure software, while Jayway AB is Java Knowledge Company based in Sweden. Interface21 is the developer of well-known application framework: The Spring Framework and Eclipse is a leading developer of application frameworks for software building.

These new members are expected to help OSGi Alliance in promoting OSGi platforms to enterprises and other markets.

Stan Moyer, OSGi Alliance president and an executive director in the Applied Research area of Telcordia Technologies said, “The pace of demand and complexity of software increasingly requires the flexible modularity and component-based development OSGi technology enables. The alliance is excited to have five industry-leading new members to further universal middleware for Java users.”

OSGi Alliance was founded by IBM, Ericson, Sun Microsystems (News - Alert) and other companies in March 1999. OSGi framework implements a dynamic and complete component model. Its components can be remotely started, installed, stopped, uninstalled, and stopped without the need for reboot. OSGi specifications are currently being used in applications ranging from open source Eclipse IDE to mobile phones. Other application areas are industrial automation, cars, building automation, grid computing, PDAs, fleet management, application services, and entertainment.

In 2003, OSGi was chosen by Eclipse as plug-in architecture for IDE platform and Eclipse Rich Client Platform. In addition, OSGi mobile manufacturer members like Nokia (News - Alert) and Motorola formed a Mobile Expert group that same year aiming to specify MIDP-based service platform for next generation mobile phones.
