The spot ran simultaneously on CBS, NBC, Fox, BET, Univision, MSNBC and TV One, and aides said it cost the campaign roughly $4 million. It profiled several Americans struggling with a tough economy, and Obama offered his ideas for a turnaround.
Obama campaign uses star power to court volunteersRALEIGH, N.C. (AP) _ Edie Falco is fidgeting and looks nervous. The star of "The Sopranos" admits to her North Carolina audience that she's a product of lower Manhattan who barely understands voters above 14th Street. She talks for just five minutes and never mentions John McCain or George Bush. "I've never had any intentions of trying to change anybody's mind," says Falco, a Barack Obama supporter. "I've heard a lot of celebrities talking about politics who, in my estimation, are not qualified to do so."
Reeves jury sees paparazzo in actionLOS ANGELES (AP) _ Jurors got to see the paparazzo suing Keanu Reeves in action. Reeves' attorneys played a video Thursday from Alison Silva's Web site that showed Silva using his supposedly damaged left hand to hold onto razor wire atop a fence to shoot video of Britney Spears. Silva then used his left hand to scale down the fence.
Beatles music to be in new video gameNEW YORK (AP) _ The Beatles are coming to a game console near you. For the first time, the legendary group's music will be featured in the lucrative video game market in a deal with MTV Games and Harmonix, creators of the "Rock Band" series. The game is scheduled to make its debut in time for next year's holiday season.
Juror injury halts testimony in retrial of SpectorLOS ANGELES (AP) _ The first day of testimony in Phil Spector's murder retrial was canceled Thursday after an alternate juror fell in the court parking lot and broke his foot. Superior Court Judge Larry Paul Fidler said he spoke with the juror, who wanted to get medical attention and return Monday. The trial is not in session on Fridays.
AP source: Hudson suspect refused polygraph testCHICAGO (AP) _ The convicted felon suspected in the slayings of actress-singer Jennifer Hudson's mother, brother and nephew told police he is innocent but balked at taking a lie-detector test, a police official said. William Balfour, the 27-year-old stepfather of Hudson's nephew and estranged husband of her sister, told detectives he had a good relationship with the Hudson family, the police official said Wednesday, speaking on condition of anonymity because the official was not authorized to discuss the case publicly.
Oscar theater designer Rockwell nabs awards gigLOS ANGELES (AP) _ David Rockwell crafted the current home of the Academy Awards show. Now he gets to jump in on Hollywood's big night itself. Rockwell will be production designer for the Oscar show on Feb. 22, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced Thursday.
Randy Newman postpones European tourLOS ANGELES (AP) _ Randy Newman is postponing his 18-date European tour. The 64-year-old "I Love L.A" and "I Love to See You Smile" singer-songwriter cited "physical limitations and severe pain caused by stenosis in the lower back and neck," a statement posted Thursday on his Web site said.
ACM names Strait artist of the decadeNASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) _ George Strait will receive the Academy of Country Music's Artist of the Decade award in recognition of his nearly 25-year career. Only four other acts have received the distinction: Marty Robbins in 1969, Loretta Lynn in 1979, Alabama in 1988 and Garth Brooks in 1998.
U.K.'s Joss Stone part of in American vote driveNEW YORK (AP) _ Even though Joss Stone can't vote in the U.S. presidential election, the British soul singer is still encouraging others to go to the voting booth next week. The 21-year-old is teaming up with HeadCount, a nonpartisan organization devoted to registering voters, to get more Americans get involved in Tuesday's election, which pits Republican John McCain against Democrat Barack Obama.
