The Santa Clara-based company slashed more than $1 billion from its sales forecast and dialed its profit expectations way back. Intel, the world's biggest maker of PC microprocessors with 80 percent of the global market, blamed a clampdown on spending for reducing demand for its chips.
YouTube channels Google with search-driven adsSAN BRUNO, Calif. (AP) _ Facing more pressure to profit from its huge audience, YouTube is letting advertisers promote their commercial clips alongside the search results at the Internet's most popular video site. The system introduced Wednesday channels a concept that has turned Google Inc., YouTube's owner, into one of the world's most profitable companies. And it gives Google a new way to try to profit from the $1.76 billion it paid to buy YouTube two years ago.
Study: Unlicensed stories reel in Internet readersSAN FRANCISCO (AP) _ Here's another reason for ailing newspaper and magazine publishers to wince: On average, the audience perusing unauthorized online copies of their articles is nearly 2.5 times larger than the readership on their own Web sites, according to a study being released Thursday. 3 LCD firms plead guilty in price-fixing schemeWASHINGTON (AP) _ Three Asian electronics firms have agreed to plead guilty and pay $585 million in fines for conspiring to drive up the prices of LCD screens used in computers, TVs, cell phones and other electronic devices. In a plea deal filed Wednesday, LG Display Co. Ltd., Sharp Corp., and Chunghwa Picture Tubes Ltd. agreed to cooperate in an antitrust investigation headed by the U.S. Justice Department. The plea agreement was filed in federal court in San Francisco.

Administration finalizing Internet gambling regsWASHINGTON (AP) _ The Bush administration is moving in its last weeks to finalize regulations to enforce a controversial law that seeks to block Internet gambling. The move is drawing hot protests from Democratic lawmakers and supporters of online betting. "This midnight rulemaking will tie the hands of the new administration, burden the financial services industry at a time of economic crisis and contradict the stated intent of the Financial Services Committee," the committee's chairman, Rep. Barney Frank, D-Mass., wrote this week to Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson.
IDC expects 2009 tech spending growth to slowNEW YORK (AP) _ Worldwide technology spending will slow significantly in 2009 because of the financial turmoil that has rattled global markets since September, research firm IDC said Wednesday. IDC now expects worldwide information technology spending to grow by 2.6 percent in 2009, down from its earlier forecast of 5.9 percent growth. In the U.S., spending is now expected to grow just 0.9 percent, well below IDC's August forecast of a 4.2 percent growth.
