Huawei to Roll out Android Handset Q3 2009

SHENZHEN, Dec 19, 2008 (SinoCast Daily Business Beat via COMTEX) --
Huawei Technologies, China's telecom equipment bellwether, lately joined the Open Handset Alliance (OHA), an open source alliance initiated by Google. Meanwhile, it said that it would launch Google Android-powered smartphones in the third quarter of 2009. Huawei is the second Chinese company to join the alliance after China Mobile.

Huawei will cut into the smartphone market in the first half of next year by launching mobile phones powered by Symbian OS and Google's Android platform. Huawei is scheduled to showcase such 3G handset prototype in the GSMA to be held this month.

So far, Huawei has made only a single smartphone, which is powered by Windows Mobile. Other than that, they are known as an entry-level handset maker and their entrance into the higher end of the market will certainly be a good thing for consumers. Huawei has said it plans on launching in North America in the next five years.
