T-Platforms Group: T-Platforms Group and Lomonosov Moscow State University Build Alliance on Development of Exascale Supercomputing Technology
(M2 PressWIRE Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) RDATE:15112010
Moscow, Russia and SC '10 -- T-Platforms Group, a leading provider of HPC systems, software, services and solutions, and Lomonosov Moscow State University (MSU) announced a MOU to collaborate on the development of next generation supercomputer technology aiming for exascale levels of computation.
The agreement signed between T-Platforms and MSU paves way to developing original exascale technology in Russia and sets forth a long-standing technological collaboration. MSU brings to the partnership its vast and unique experience in the development of parallel algorithms, programming tools, and application software, as well as extensive expertise in testing and fine-tuning cutting edge hardware technology. T-Platforms will continue to develop original supercomputing equipment from components up to the system level, along with system management and monitoring software, designed to radically improve power efficiency, augment resilience, and improve manageability of next generation computers.
T-Platforms and MSU have a successful track record of teamwork that has resulted in the two largest Russian supercomputers, Chebyshev (2008, 60TF), and Lomonosov, (2009, 350TF) currently ranked #17 on the Top 500 list (www.top500.org) of the world's fastest supercomputers. The two organizations have partnered on techniques for improving software scalability with tremendous results. One example in particular is a thermal simulation at MSU that achieved an incredible 99 percent computational efficiency (real vs. peak performance) over 1,000 nodes.
"Supercomputing has become a crucial factor of competitiveness for science and businesses, capable of propelling a country's economic growth and prosperity," said Victor Sadovnichy, Rector of Lomonosov Moscow State University. "It is of vital importance for Russia to compete successfully with other world leaders in the development of next-generation supercomputing technology, as speed of innovation and improved quality of life depend a great deal on this technology. The cooperation of Russian supercomputer industry leaders, both vendors and customers, is a fundamental condition required to successfully meet the many challenges we face as we move forward toward exascale levels of computation."
"It has been demonstrated that the quality of technological breakthroughs achieved through computer simulations is in direct proportion to the performance level of available supercomputers," said Vsevolod Opanasenko, T-Platforms CEO. "However, evolutionary development of today's technology cannot provide substantial performance increases. We need a revolutionary leap to achieve this. All our efforts are now directed towards developing next decade technology, and the efficient use of this technology heavily depends on input from leading customers and software developers, such as Lomonosov Moscow State University. We are very excited working in conjunction with one of the world's leading scientific, educational and cultural institutions."
Founded in 1755, Moscow State University is one of Russia's largest and oldest higher education institutions. It is also a leading scientific, educational and cultural center of the country. MSU offers training in almost all branches of modern science and humanities. Its undergraduates may choose one of 57 qualifications, while doctoral students may specialize in 168 different areas. The total number of MSU students exceeds 40,000. In addition, approximately 10,000 high school students attend various clubs and courses at MSU. There have been 11 Nobel Prize winners among its professors and alumni, out of 18 Russians who have received the prestigious prize so far. Many more MSU scientists have been awarded various Soviet and Russian prizes for their achievements. Among them are 60 Lenin Prizes and 120 State Prizes, with over 40 MSU scientists having received the State Prizes over the last decade with six this year.
Established in 2002, T-Platforms Group has completed more than 200 supercomputer installations and is rapidly emerging as one of the leading global HPC companies, providing comprehensive supercomputing systems, software and services, with customer installations consistently included on the TOP500 worldwide list of the most powerful supercomputers.
T-Platforms Group consists of T-Platforms, T-Services, T-Massive Computing, and T-Design, with locations in Hannover, Moscow, Kiev and Taipei.
