(M2 PressWIRE Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) RDATE:15112010 Moscow, Russia and SC '10 -- T-Platforms Group, a leading provider of HPC systems, software, services and solutions, and Lomonosov Moscow State University (MSU) announced a MOU to collaborate on the development of next generation supercomputer technology aiming for exascale levels of computation.


The agreement signed between T-Platforms and MSU paves way to developing original exascale technology in Russia and sets forth a long-standing technological collaboration. MSU brings to the partnership its vast and unique experience in the development of parallel algorithms, programming tools, and application software, as well as extensive expertise in testing and fine-tuning cutting edge hardware technology. T-Platforms will continue to develop original supercomputing equipment from components up to the system level, along with system management and monitoring software, designed to radically improve power efficiency, augment resilience, and improve manageability of next generation computers.

T-Platforms and MSU have a successful track record of teamwork that has resulted in the two largest Russian supercomputers, Chebyshev (2008, 60TF), and Lomonosov, (2009, 350TF) currently ranked #17 on the Top 500 list (www.top500.org) of the world's fastest supercomputers. The two organizations have partnered on techniques for improving software scalability with tremendous results. One example in particular is a thermal simulation at MSU that achieved an incredible 99 percent computational efficiency (real vs. peak performance) over 1,000 nodes.

It is also a leading scientific, educational and cultural center of the country. MSU offers training in almost all branches of modern science and humanities. Its undergraduates may choose one of 57 qualifications, while doctoral students may specialize in 168 different areas. The total number of MSU students exceeds 40,000. In addition, approximately 10,000 high school students attend various clubs and courses at MSU. There have been 11 Nobel Prize winners among its professors and alumni, out of 18 Russians who have received the prestigious prize so far. Many more MSU scientists have been awarded various Soviet and Russian prizes for their achievements. Among them are 60 Lenin Prizes and 120 State Prizes, with over 40 MSU scientists having received the State Prizes over the last decade with six this year.
