Juniper Networks Partners with Openwave to Redefine Mobile Video Delivery and Revolutionize User Viewing Experience

Openwave Systems (Nasdaq: OPWV), a global software innovator delivering context-aware mediation and messaging solutions, today announced that Juniper Networks (NYSE: JNPR) has selected the Company as a strategic partner to integrate its Media Optimizer into Juniper's Media Flow solution for mobile video optimization. The combined solution is expected to dramatically improve the economics of delivering video over mobile networks while revolutionizing the user viewing experience.

According to Yankee Group (News - Alert), video is projected to exceed 65 percent of all mobile data traffic by 2013, creating a capacity crunch on mobile networks and negatively impacting subscribers' viewing experience, resulting in downward pressure on both revenues and profitability of mobile service providers. The Media Flow video optimization solution provides a scalable and transparent mechanism that maximizes the subscriber's Quality of Experience (QoE) while at the same time enhancing profitability by deferring RAN CAPEX and OPEX. The solution offers price-performance improvement over traditional optimization solutions by leveraging the Juniper Service Delivery Gateway (News - Alert) (SDG). The context-aware capabilities of the solution help adapt video traffic according to network conditions such as congestion, device capabilities and user preferences.

Openwave Media Optimizer

Openwave Media Optimizer is a context-aware video mediation platform that enables service providers to proactively manage mobile video delivery and user experience under congested network conditions. Its patent-pending technology can proactively detect congestion and automatically trigger optimization when the network reaches predetermined thresholds, localizing optimization benefits to where and when it is needed. For subscribers, this means better quality video, smooth download and playback on smartphones, feature phones, netbooks and laptops.

Junos® Open SDK

The Junos Open SDK enables the rapid porting of the Openwave video steering technology to the Service Delivery Gateway. The technology is used to steer traffic toward the Openwave Media Optimizer as required by the application.

Juniper Service Delivery Gateway

The Service Delivery Gateway is based on the MX 3D Universal Edge Router and can be used to consolidate a variety of functions found on mobile networks. One of those functions enables the steering of video traffic toward the Openwave Media Optimizer. Other SDG functions include Carrier Grade NAT, Firewall, MPLS VPN, and much more.
