China Unicom to Launch WoPhone
BEIJING, Feb 28, 2011 (SinoCast Daily Business Beat via COMTEX) -- China Unicom (Hong Kong) Ltd. (NYSE: CHU, SEHK: 0762, and SHSE: 600050) today will launch WoPhone and related operating system, which is developed on the basis of Android and will be embedded with 3G applications promoted by the leading telecommunications carrier.
WoPhone is compatible with several different mobile phone operating systems. It will be sold at a range from CNY 1,000 to CNY 2,000 and oriented to medium- and low-end users.
Mobile phone makers including Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd., ZTE Corporation (SEHK: 0763 and SZSE: 000063) and Beijing Tianyu Communication Equipment Co., Ltd. have participated in the development of WoPhone.
China Unicom will soon launch developer community and application download platform designed for WoPhone. The company will lift up subsidies provided for service packages of the proprietary branded mobile phone.
Actually, China Unicom proposed a plan to build mobile phone operating system as early as 2009, which was formerly named UPhone and integrated with functions such as application shop, 3D hardware speedup, touch screen, widget, GPS and LBS.
