Bangladesh's mobile operators sell nearly 17 mln new connections in 2011

Bangladesh's cell phone companies
sold nearly 17 million new connections in 2011, making the country
's total subscribers reach 85.455 million at the end of last
month, an official said Sunday.
"Six phone operators in the last year added 16.81 million new
users", the official of Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory
Commission (BTRC) told Xinhua.
The overall subscription growth last year registered a 3.64
percent growth from that in 2010, said the official who preferred
to be unnamed.
In 2010, according to BTRC data, the South Asian country's cell
phone companies added 16.22 million new subscribers, posting an
impressive 108 percent growth compared with that in 2009.
The BTRC official said the companies added a total of 1.379
million new subscribers last month.
The number of subscribers of six cell phone operators --
Grameenphone, Banglalink, Robi, Airtel, Citycell, Teletalk -- at
the end of December stood at 36.493 million, 23.753 million, 16.
139 million, 6.026 million, 1.824 million and 1.218 million
respectively, he said.
