NOKIA TO LAUNCH CHEAPER WINDOWS SMARTPHONE: Nokia is set to unveil next week a new, cheaper smartphone using Microsoft's Windows Phone software, targeting a wider market for its new range of smartphones, Reuters has reported, citing two sources close to the company. In addition to the new Lumia 610 Nokia will also unveil at the Mobile World Congress trade show a global version of its high-end Lumia 900 phone, the sources said.
SAMSUNG AND SAP AG TO PROMOTE USE OF ANDROID FOR BUSINESS: Samsung Electronics and SAP AG have entered in to a partnership aimed at making mobile devices running Android operating system safer to use as corporate tools, Bloomberg has reported, citing people familiar with the matter. The cooperation will include e-mail encryption as well as making handsets compatible with device-management systems that remotely update software and toggle phone functions such as switching the camera on and off, one of the people said. The two firms will present their plans next week at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, the sources said.
ETISALAT TO EXIT INDIA, ENDING ETISALAT DB PARTNERSHIP: Etisalat has said it is ending operations in India and winding up its joint venture, Etisalat DB, Gulf News has reported. The company's decision comes three weeks after the government of India revoked more than 120 operator licenses as part of a wide ranging corruption probe. "As unanimously resolved by the board this evening, Etisalat DB will be taking steps to reduce operating costs, including the suspension of its network and services, pursuant to the terms of its UAS licenses," Etisalat said. The telecoms firm, which has 1.7 million subscribers in India, said that the Supreme Court judgments "are based on actions that took place long before Etisalat entered the Indian market."
