Cutting Edge Lighting Technologies Showcased at UofT Workshop

From the development of the light bulb over a century ago to today's LED technology, lighting has a come a long way. The latest in lighting technologies will be showcased this week in a workshop developed by The Institute for Optical Sciences (IOS) at the University of Toronto.
Called SSLNet Smart Sustainable Lighting, the workshop will be held Friday, March 16, at the Medical Sciences Building.
"We are having a day-long workshop where we feature leading faculty, members from the lighting industry, end users and lighting designers," said Venkat Venkataramanan, founder of the Solid State Lighting Network (SSLN) at IOS. "There will also be a technological showcase where different companies and national labs will showcase their product development."
From back-lit LED displays to LED chips, the lighting industry is having no shortage of growth due to research breakthroughs in recent years, he says.
"Lighting is the only sector that is growing without any government subsidies. All others technologies such as solar cell etc. have received more subsidies. The fact that the lighting industry is growing so fast is due to the scientific breakthroughs that happened in the mid-90s which is now translating into market growth."
New digital smart systems can sense, analyze, adapt, and control our lighting in ways that were impossible with older technologies, while presenting new opportunities for greater energy efficiency and improved lighting quality. The workshop will address challenges and achievements in improving the efficiency and quality of lighting systems and intelligent controls. It brings together leaders from the research and industrial communities who are working on this full-system shift towards smart sustainable lighting.
"The theme of the workshop is 'smart sustainable lighting,' which focuses on bringing smartness to lighting that includes wireless control setup, self-regulating power supplies and improving choices of colours," says Venkataramanan.
He adds 100 people are expected to attend the event, 70 percent of them from industry. Speakers are coming from as far as Newfoundland and British Columbia, from such corporations as Phillips and CREE Canada.
The Solid State Lighting Network (SSLNet) was founded in 2009 by the IOS at the University of Toronto to catalyze the adoption of new LED and related energy efficient lighting technologies. It has since grown to be the largest and most active lighting network in Canada. The SSLNet brings together academic researchers, industry, end users of lighting technologies and government agencies to foster constant dialogue, knowledge sharing and to facilitate collaborative projects between its members.
