Coborn's to open in late spring

Apr 07, 2012 (The Jamestown Sun - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- For the past five months, Jamestown grocery store options have been limited to Walmart in the southwest end of the city and Hugo's downtown. Later this spring, Coborn's will add itself to the mix.

The St. Cloud, Minn.-based company is expected to open its first store in North Dakota in mid to late spring, according to Emily Coborn, company spokeswoman.

"We're excited about it and we hope the community of Jamestown really embraces us," she said.

Coborn's currently has 29 locations in the upper Midwest, including 27 in Minnesota and two in South Dakota.

The employee-owned chain announced in October that it would open a store at the Park Plaza Mall in southeast Jamestown.

It is currently remodeling the 43,000-square-foot space, which was the previous home of Leever's County Market until it closed in November.

Emily Coborn said while an official grand opening date has not been set, the company is optimistic about its progress so far.

"We're making good strides right now and finding strong employees for the Jamestown store," she said.

On its website, Coborn's is advertising open part-time and full-time positions for 13 different types of jobs, including cashiers, clerks and managers.

"We're evaluating a number of candidates right now and it's safe to assume we will be filling those positions even more so as it gets closer to the open date," Emily Coborn said.

As for joining the competition for grocery stores in Jamestown, she said it's a healthy thing for the company and the city of Jamestown.

"It certainly keeps us on our toes," she said. "We definitely need to earn our stripes in Jamestown, that's for sure." Emily Coborn said the company is looking forward to providing a "comfortable shopping experience" to the folks of Jamestown and said the store would not be "cutting any corners" to make that the case.
