Port of Bremerton-based business wins large Navy contract
BREMERTON, Apr 08, 2012 (Kitsap Sun - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
Pacific Ship Repair and Fabrication, operating out of the Port of Bremerton's Olympic View Industrial Park, recently won a large contract to repair ships at Naval Station Everett.
The five-year deal could earn the San Diego-based company $114 million if all options are exercised, said Greg Bryant, general manager of the local office.
The contract is for non-dry-dock repair and modification of guided-missile frigates and guided-missile destroyers homeported in Puget Sound, and any Navy surface ships visiting Puget Sound, Bryant said. Currently assigned to Everett are frigates USS Ford, USS Rodney M. Davis and USS Ingraham, and destroyers USS Shoup and USS Momsen.
Pacific Ship is no stranger to the Everett ships, having worked on them as a subcontractor to Vigor Shipyards, formerly Todd Shipyards. About nine months ago, the Navy decided to split the contract, which had been held by Vigor, between dry-dock and non-dry-dock work, Bryant said. Pacific Ship won the non-dry-dock portion and Vigor kept the dry-dock jobs.
The company established its Puget Sound site at the port in 1994. It has stayed busy performing maintenance, repair and modernization mostly on Navy ships but also for the Coast Guard and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Though it has had steady work, as both prime contractor and subcontractor, this contract is special.
"It's certainly an increase to what we'd done in the past," Bryant said.
Employment ranges from 30 to 150, depending on available work. Most are highly skilled craftsmen drawn from local unions, Bryant said. More people will be needed to administer the large contract. Whether others are hired depends on the timing of the work.
Pacific Ship is in its second location at the industrial park, occupying a 12,000-square-foot building.
"The site works very well for us," Bryant said.
