2 LVH employees repeatedly stole from cash machine, police say
Apr 13, 2012 (The Morning Call - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
Two Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest employees withdrew at least $2,000 from a cash machine at the hospital and tampered with the ATM to make it appear they had taken nothing, police said.
Alyssa Pascio-Dikaitis, 21, and Camella C. Clarke, 22, next-door neighbors on N. 20th Street, Allentown, were charged Wednesday with theft, receiving stolen property and conspiracy.
Their arrests followed an investigation by Salisbury Township police and hospital security into mysterious money losses from the ATM owned by People's First Federal Credit Union.
The inquiry found that the cash machine, which sits outside the hospital cafeteria, shut down around the time of each unexplained cash loss, and that the suspects were the last to use the ATM before it was disabled, police said.
Pascio-Dikaitis and Clarke stole as much as $7,800 from the machine from September 2011 to April, according to the arrest affidavit filed by township officer Michael Palansky.
After hospital security set up a video camera to monitor the machine, it recorded Pascio-Dikaitis and Clarke using the ATM just before the machine sensed an irregularity and shut down, police said.
Because the shutdown happened as the money was dispensed, the ATM voided the transaction in its records, producing bank statements that indicated no money was withdrawn, police said.
Confronted by hospital security, Clarke was first to admit she and Pascio-Dikaitis made the deceptive cash withdrawals, the arrest affidavit says. Clarke said she used both her debit card and Pascio-Dikaitis' card to tap the ATM, police said.
Pascio-Dikaitis also admitted to the thefts, the arrest affidavit says.
Pascio-Dikaitis and Clarke were arraigned Wednesday night by District Judge Karen C. Devine. Each was released on $10,000 bail to await further court proceedings.
