Zumbathon to collect dog food, cat litter for Humane Society
RICHMOND, Apr 14, 2012 (Richmond Register - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
As an entirely volunteer organization, the Humane Society Animal League for Life of Madison County needs dog food and cat litter -- lots of it.
Sunday's Move Your Paws Zumbathon, from 2 to 4 p.m. in the White Hall Elementary School cafeteria, should help replenish supplies, however. Your regular money will not be good for admission. Participants must donate a bag of pet food and/or cat litter at the door.
Tracy Miller, fitness director for Richmond gym, leads only two Zumbathons a year -- for breast cancer and for animals.
"People see animals as disposable," Miller said. "When you look into the eyes of these animals, you can see their pain. They can't tell their stories but I will."
A pet-lover her entire life, Miller volunteers at the Humane Society any chance she gets, she said.
Miller organized the first Move Your Paws Zumbathon last year at which 135 participants donated more than 600 pounds of pet supplies.
"You should have seen the huge pile of pet food and cat litter last year," said Veronica Rosignoli of Berea.
Without fundraisers like the Zumbathon, pet charities may fall short of the supplies it takes to house and care for all the animals who are in need, she said.
The Humane Society/Animal League for Life of Madison County is a non-profit organization devoted to the prevention of animal cruelty and the betterment of all animals in the community, according to its website.
The organization's current program focuses on reducing pet overpopulation by promoting humane education in the school system and encouraging spaying and neutering through their discount program.
The discount is offered only to residents of Madison County and discounts depend on the availability of funds. More than 80 percent of the program's is raised by the Humane Society, its website states.
