New terms bring big smiles

PAULS VALLEY, Oklahoma -- With the anxious moments gone from last Friday's filing period conclusion a handful of Garvin County incumbents are now able to relax and reflect on their reality of winning four-year terms without any opposition.
The county officers able to avoid the campaign trail and win the new terms after last week's three-day filings were District 2 County Commissioner Shon Richardson, Sheriff Larry Rhodes, Court Clerk Cindy Roberts and County Clerk Lori Fulks.
Richardson made it clear Monday he feels very fortunate as he won his third term in office since first being elected back in 2004.
"The Lord has been good to me," Richardson said. I've been blessed.
"There is work to be done, and I am thankful for the opportunity to serve."
For Rhodes it's his first full term in the sheriff's office after he won a midterm election back in 2010. The win allowed him to serve out an unexpired term.
Now Rhodes has his own term, allowing him and his staff to remained focused on their law enforcement work.
"I'm elated," Rhodes said. "You don't know how pleased I am.
"Running unopposed is the highest compliment an elected official can receive. I view this as approval of the work we are doing and the direction I am taking the sheriff's office," he said.
The excitement levels of getting their own terms was still up there on Monday for Roberts and Fulks, who were both appointed to their respective offices last year.
"I'm excited," Roberts said. "I'm looking forward to the next four years in serving the people of Garvin County."
"Yeah, I'm very excited," Fulks said.
"I have been here 17 years, but this is my first time," she said, referring to a full, four-year term of her own.
The one race that did shape up was expected as a total of four candidates filed to seek the District 1 office held by county Commissioner Kenneth Holden for more than two decades.
Holden announced weeks ago he would serve through July 1 before stepping down and into retirement.
Filing last week to run for the office were David Kinard and Larry T. Cooper, both of Maysville, and Stan Spivey and Jarod Work, both of Lindsay.
The four will compete against each other during a primary election on June 26. If a runoff is needed it would come on Aug. 28.
The winner will serve out the two years of Holden's unexpired term.
