Waurika Chamber preps for several future events

WAURIKA, Jun 15, 2012 (Waurika News-Democrat - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- A rodeo. Greeting visitors. Summer reading. Ribbon cuttings. Economic development. A circus.

When the Waurika Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors held their June meeting, there was some diversity of topics.

Early in the meeting, President Brad Scott told 10 other board members entries continue to come in for the 2012 Waurika Ranch Rodeo, which is scheduled for July 13-14, at Coyote Hills Arena. Scott said, "We have had some different and unusual vendors sign up." The rodeo is a major fundraiser for the Chamber, and he added, "Things are on course." Chamber members are waiting to hear a proposal from Jim Did It Sign Co. of Duncan, which deals with a project to renovate the city's major "welcome" sign at the corner of D Street and U.S. Highway 81.

In addition to refurbishing the sign, Scott said a new message saying "Welcome to Waurika" will be part of the design, and noted there message could also include the line "Home of Brick Streets and Western Values." "Once proposals are ready, the wording will be finalized," Scott added.

An expanded summer reading course at the Waurika Public Library was discussed, which includes serving a lunch to children attending. Waurika Public Schools Superintendent Roxie Terry noted students taking summer courses in the district have also been attending the luncheons.

Board members voted to have the Chamber donate $500 to the reading program.

Scott said Chamber members should plan to attend ribbon-cutting ceremonies for JW's Travel Stop and Posh Paws, and Gayle Johnson noted that Chamber members should attend the Community Economic Development (CED) meeting being hosted by the Association of South Central Oklahoma Governments on June 12. Participating in the CED meeting would play into grant requests the city could make in the future.

Don Johnson agreed to head a ticket sales committee for an appearance of the Culpepper-Merriweather Circus scheduled for September. Sponsored by the Chamber, the circus performs two shows during its one-day appearance, and members agreed there will be an effort this year to extend the ticket sales campaign to Ryan and Ringling.
