Electronics recycling day is Saturday

TARBORO, Nov 09, 2012 (The Daily Southerner - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Edgecombe County folks have a chance to reduce their carbon footprint Saturday morning by recycling their old, non-working or unused electronics.

From 8 a.m. until noon, electronic devices will be accepted at the county landfill, located at 2861 Colonial Road in Tarboro, in observance of "America Recycles Day." The day is celebrated nationwide on Thursday, but Edgecombe County is having its event on the weekend in hopes of drawing more participation.

"We're just encouraging residents to properly dispose of their electronic devices," said Cornelia McGee-Anthony, coordinator for Keep America Beautiful of Nash and Edgecombe Counties. A law banning the random disposal of computers and televisions went into effect in North Carolina on July 1, 2011.

"There's a lot of lead and different components inside electronics they're trying to keep out of the landfill," said Gloria Moseley, a spokesperson for Edgecombe County Solid Waste Management. She said the electronics collected in Saturday's drive would be taken to a warehouse, where the components would be taken apart and restored for reuse.

"Everyone should recycle every day, 365 days a year. Through doing that, we're able to conserve our natural resources and create green jobs," McGee-Anthony said.

More than 14,000 jobs have been created statewide as a result of recycling, according to the North Carolina Division of Environmental and Natural Resources.

The county landfill partners with Keep America Beautiful twice each year to sponsor an electronics recycling -- once in the spring, in celebration of Earth Day, and once in the fall, in celebration of America Recycles Day. During last spring's event, held at Lowe's, Moseley said she loaded up a two-ton truck with electronic devices twice.

The following is a list of acceptable electronics for recycling Saturday morning: televisions, computers, monitors, printers/ scanners, keyboards, speakers, laptops, typewriters, telephones, cell phones, VCR's, DVD players, camcorders, projectors, radios, batteries, gaming systems and copier/fax machines.

County residents who are unable to make it to the landfill on Saturday have the option of visiting one of eight other sites to recycle their electronics: 335 Wells Road in Whitakers, 1542 Gay Road in Rocky Mount, 348 Baie Road in Rocky Mount, 1056 Spivey Road in Tarboro, 1429 Hart's Chapel Road in Tarboro, 442 Living Hope Church Road in Macclesfield, 1424 Dickens Road in Speed, 46 Burnette Farm Road in Tarboro, and 2797 Colonial Road in Tarboro.
