Research and Markets: Smartphone Penetration in the U.K. Is Expected To Grow From 59 Percent of All Handsets Sold In 2012 To 84 Percent In 2017

DUBLIN --(Business Wire)--

Research and Markets ( has announced the addition of the "The United Kingdom Telecom Intelligence Report: Fiber Deployment and Launch of 4G/LTE Boost Broadband" report to their offering.

In 2012, the UK telecom market will generate $56.7bn in service revenue. The author expects the market to demonstrate 1.6% CAGR in USD terms, generating a cumulative revenue opportunity of $353.0bn between 2012 and 2017.

The driving force behind the growth will be broadband services in both the fixed and mobile segments. We expect that thanksto the UK's shift towards superfast broadband and with the launch of long-anticipated LTE (News - Alert) services, total mobile data revenue will grow from $20.6bn in 2012 to $25.8bn in 2017. In addition, the UK, while recording an impressive 100Mbps fixed broadband download speed in some regions, still has residents without access to any broadband services at all. For example, according to the Office of National Statistics, as of August 2012, there were 8m adults who had never used the Internet. This fact alone offers a number of opportunities for the segment.

Pay-TV is expected to generate a service revenue opportunity of US$55bn over five years, with a boost from the growing popularity of bundled services.

3G services are expected to remain the most prominent technology over the next five years, with 62.7 million subscribers in 2017, down from 63.6 million in 2012, due to subscriber migration to 4G, says Olena Kaplan, Associate Analyst at Pyramid Research. The accelerated digital switchover, completed on October 27, 2012, freed up frequencies that will be auctioned in the fourth quarter of 2012, in turn allowing other operators to commercially launch LTE services by early 2013. Everything Everywhere, the largest mobile operator, was the first to launch LTE services, which it did at the end of October 2012, she notes.
