Area children get first visits this year with St. Nick

COLUMBUS, Nov 25, 2012 (Columbus Telegram - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- A whole year is a long time to be a good little girl or boy.

Just ask Madelyn Tworek.

When the 3-year-old was asked by Santa Claus if she had behaved this year, she answered with an honest "no." "It's hard, Santa," Tworek said.

Santa got a chuckle out of the response and said he appreciated the direct answer. In true holiday spirit, he proceeded to hear what the child wanted gift wrapped this Christmas.

Tworek was among the first in line to tell St. Nick what her wish was this holiday season when Santa arrived in town Saturday.

The reindeer got the day off as the Jolly Old Elf came by riding on a construction truck. The non-traditional mode of transportation fit with the theme set by the Columbus Area Chamber of Commerce of "Building a Better Community and new Chamber." Santa was joined by Mrs. Claus. She had been MIA for the past few years.

After a quick ride on a horse-draw carriage, the couple sat in their toasty house in Frankfort Square, listened to the requests by the dozens of children who lined up early for the afternoon arrival and handed out candy canes.

Electronics were high on the list of items requested by kids this year. Some also wanted a pet or clothing.

Few came as well prepared as Joey Hajek. The 8-year-old cut out pictures of items he wanted from a catalogue and pasted them to pieces of paper.

Hajek figured that way Santa would have a reminder of all the things he wanted and the quantity of each like microphones, a fortune cookie maker, Laser Tag, headphones and an Easy Bake Oven.

Santa will be at his house from 1-5 p.m. every Saturday and Sunday and from 6-8 p.m. Thursday now until Christmas Eve.

For kids who can't make it for a visit, they can drop off a letter to Santa in his mailbox at Frankfort Square. St. Nick will answer them as long as a return address is included.
