Telstra a smart match for NRL
Dec 12, 2012 (The Australian Financial Review - ABIX via COMTEX) --
Telstra has signed a new five-year rights deal for digital devices with the National Rugby League (NRL). It is worth $A100m-plus, and at the insistence of the Australian Rugby League Commission will result in Telstra also granting access to rivals Singtel Optus and Vodafone in exchange for a fee. The telco had previously placed a strong emphasis on exclusive contracts with sporting bodies, such as in the contract negotiated with the Australian Football League (AFL) in 2011 and worth $A150m. Optus had recently been forced to discontinue a service of streaming live matches to its subscribers with a minimal delay, following legal action by the AFL and NRL.
