Chelf has priorities in order

ENID, Okla., Dec 16, 2012 (Enid News & Eagle - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Some fact and opinion while remembering sports in its proper place after the tragedies in Connecticut on Friday.

Laurel to Enid's Clint Chelf. The OSU quarterback's biggest achievement this fall was not starting four games for the Cowboys.

It was Saturday, when he graduated in three-and-a-half years.

That's an achievement for someone not playing football.

It showed he had his priorities right all along, and we shouldn't have been surprised when he didn't quit after he started the season as the No. 3 quarterback behind Wes Lunt and J.W. Walsh.

Laurel to FOX Sports Oklahoma for showing the History of Oklahoma football series, which is currently available on DVDs.

The network showed Part I and II of a Birth of a Champion (1895-1920 and 1921-1946) on Friday and Saturday, but there still's plenty of history for OU fans to soak up.

Here are the times for the rest of the series: Tonight, 5:30 p.m., Legacy of Winning I (1947-52) Tuesday, 9 p.m., Legacy of Winning II (1953-55) Saturday, 7 p.m., Legacy of Winning III (1956-57) Sunday, 9 p.m., Legacy of Winning IV (1957-63) A six-hour marathon will be shown on Christmas Day at noon.

Laurel to OU quarterback Landry Jones for winning the Bob Kalsu Award at the Sooners' annual award dinner on Friday.

The award is given annually to a member of the team who personifies Kalsu's spirit of leadership, serving as a motivator and a role model for his teammates.

Kalsu was a role model's role model.

Kalsu, an All-American tackle in 1967, played for the Buffalo Bills in 1968.

He went through ROTC at OU and could have easily chose to serve in a reserve unit.

But he said he gave the Army his word and went into the service as an commissoned officer. Serving as a member of the highly-decorated 101st Airborne Division, he was killed by North Vietnamese mortar fire on July 21, 1970. He left a wife and two children.

Jones' leadership has gone beyond the field. Quietly, he was gone on missions to Haiti and has spoken to numerous FCA groups, including the northwest Oklahoma FCA awards dinner in Enid in 2010.

He is the Big 12's all-time leader in passing yards (16,368) and total offense (16,000 yards).

He can become the first OU starting quarterback to lead the Sooners to four bowl wins if the Big Red can beat Texas A&M in the Cotton Bowl Jan. 4.

Jones, to his credit, took responsibility for losses. He never snubbed the press in victory or defeat.

A dart to those basketball tournaments who didn't have a seventh-place game.

While it might be called the "toilet bowl,'' those are the teams that might need the experience of playing another game the most.

It gives a struggling or young team a game where they have a reasonable chance to win a game. Could give a big boost to a team which needs a win in the worst way.

Good to see the upcoming Wheat Capital Tournament continue its practice of a seventh-place game.
