Intel survey reveals increasing computer, Internet use among Turkey's youth [Cihan News Agency (Turkey)]

(Cihan News Agency (Turkey) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) ISTANBUL (CIHAN)- A survey by Intel, the world's largest semiconductor chipmaker, reveals that computers, the Internet, personal digital devices and social networking have become indispensable for young people, and that they spend a lot of time online.

According to the survey results, on average, about 330 minutes is spent on the computer each day, which equates to five-and-a-half hours. Fifty-four percent of those interviewed use the Internet to access a social network, and 39 percent use the Internet to read news.

For "A Survey on Young Turkey," Intel surveyed 3,000 people aged 13-29 in 26 provinces across Turkey. Twenty percent of the interviewees are university graduates; 51 percent are currently students; and 32 percent are working. The vast majority -- 80 percent -- are single.

Intel Turkey General Manager Burak Aydin said the primary goal was to examine the changing demands and needs of society. "Young people can adapt to change best. What they think and how they behave is of utmost importance in building a technologically enhanced future for ourselves," he said.

The survey reveals that half of the respondents have a personal computer and that one in three young respondents has a notebook computer. The most commonly used piece of technological equipment among the young is a cellphone; according to the survey results, about 98 percent of the respondents use either standard cellphones or smartphones. PCs, notebooks and then smartphones that offer advanced capabilities and connectivity follow cellphones in frequency of use. While 29 percent of the young people in urban areas have smartphones, the percentage decreases to 11 in rural areas. Fifty-nine percent of the smartphone owners use their device for communication and 21 percent use it for portable Internet access.

The survey also shows that young people use PCs mostly for research and playing computer games and they prefer notebooks for social networking and accessing the Internet anywhere they want for other purposes. Fifty-six percent of those surveyed have a Facebook account, while 19 percent have a Twitter account, and 11 percent have a Google+ social networking account. More than half of the respondents with Facebook accounts say that they regularly check their account every day.

Online shopping has also become quite a big trend among the young, the survey shows. One in four interviewees uses online shopping capabilities. Men aged 25-29 use online shopping most among those surveyed, and clothing is most often what the is purchased online, followed by electronic devices and books. Every two in three of the young people surveyed think digital devices are symbols of social status, and more than half of the respondents believe that people who do not use technological devices are behind the times. Two in three also said using the computer makes them socialize more, which indicates that young people view being active in a virtual form on social networking sites as being social.
