Teens to face court for robbing students in Emmaus, Allentown

Jan 29, 2013 (The Morning Call (Allentown - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Using the tracking systems in a stolen iPhone and iPad, Allentown police were able to track down a pair of teen robbers in October, a detective testified Tuesday.


The robbery victim, a college student, testified a teenage woman and man robbed her on Oct. 6 at knifepoint on Hamilton Boulevard near Cedar Crest Boulevard, but she managed to get a description of the robber's getaway car, including a partial license plate number.

Using the description and the victim's iPhone and iPad's tracking information, police traced the stolen goods to Silk and Washington streets in Allentown -- a short distance away from the apartment of Angel F. Gil, 19, and his 18-year-old girlfriend, Denisse F. Guzman, Allentown police Det. Ray Ferarro testified.

Police obtained a search warrant and arrested the teens as they hid in a neighbor's garage, he said.

Senior Judge John Dugan found enough evidence was presented to send robbery charges and burglary charges for entering the neighbor's garage to Lehigh Country Court. The two teens, along with Daquasia K. Ransome, 19, of Emmaus, also must face robbery charges in county court for allegedly taking an iPhone from a 16-year-old Emmaus High student as she walked home from school, Dugan ruled. All three remain in Lehigh County Prison.

Guzman and Ransome gave up their right to a preliminary hearing on the robberies, but Gil had a hearing and his girlfriend was one of the witnesses called up to testify against him.

Guzman said was Ransome and Gil in Emmaus on Oct. 3. At some point, Ransome asked Gil to pull up next to a girl who was walking in the 500 block of North Street, she testified.

Ransome got out of the car, pulled a knife on the 16-year-old girl and demanded her phone, Guzman testified.

The victim testified she was shocked by the robbery, thinking it wasn't real.

"I thought it was a joke until I saw the knife," the victim said.

After being threatened, the victim gave up the phone and the robber began to walk away, she testified.

Three days later, Guzman and Gil committed the robbery in the 2900 block of Hamilton Boulevard, Guzman testified.

Guzman testified Gil ordered her to rob a woman waiting for a bus or he would break Guzman's phone. She testified she and Gil had an abusive relationship, threatening to kick her out of their apartment if she did not help him.

Guzman said she approached the victim and demanded her iPhone and iPad, threatening to hurt her if she did not comply. The victim, who is Chinese and a college student, spoke through a translator,testifying she also didn't believe the young woman was serious.

The victim said she smiled and replied, "No, I can't give it to you." Guzman testified she grabbed the iPhone and iPad and ran off with the victim giving chase. Gil got out of his car, pulled a knife and the victim backed off, Guzman testified.

The two were arrested hours later, Ferarro testified. The electronics were never located, he said.

According to court records, the victim in the Emmaus robbery learned of that robbery and looked up Guzman on Facebook, recognizing her as a former classmate. The victim looked through Guzman's photos on Facebook and saw one of the woman who robbed her, according to court records.

Emmaus police identified that woman as Ransome.
