SANTA CRUZ Pay taxes, help otters Californians can make a donation to sea otter research through a voluntary checkoff on state income tax forms.

In 2012, state taxpayers donated more than $350,000 to the research, but contributions are lagging behind this year. Taxpayers need to donate at least $273,025 to keep the checkoff on the form.

During the past six years, the California Sea Otter Fund has collected more than $1.75 million to enable researchers to better understand the threats to the marine mammal, such as infectious disease, oil spills, limited food supplies and environmental degradation.

Californians who have filed their income taxes but who would like to donate to sea otter research can visit the Monterey Bay Aquarium website and use the "Save the Oceans" link to support the aquarium's many efforts.
