Tollgrade Named Smart Grid Sensor Market Share Leader in North America

(PR Web Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Reston, VA (PRWEB) June 27, 2013 Tollgrade Communications, Inc., the market leading provider of predictive fault analytics that is redefining a new standard for reliability at the world’s largest electric utilities and broadband providers, announced today that they were ranked number one in market share for “Smart Grid Sensors” as defined by a new study published by information and analytics provider IHS The report, entitled “The North American Market for Smart Grid Sensors – 2013,” also ranks Tollgrade in the top five in three other related sensor market share categories.

“In 2013, North American utilities know they are no longer able to run their networks without real-time intelligence from the distribution side of the grid,” said Edward H. Kennedy, President and CEO, Tollgrade Communications. “Tollgrade is excited to be recognized as paving the way forward as a market leader accelerating adoption of this transformative smart grid technology.” “The market for feeder line sensors is undergoing radical change now,” said Michael Markides, associate director of the Smart Utility Infrastructure Group at IHS. “Older devices are being replaced by next-generation technologies that are offered by new market entrants. There are numerous takeaways from this, including the continued growth in distribution-level electronic devices, the continued push toward decentralizing grid intelligence and automation, as well as showing the evolving habits and behaviors of utilities in North America as they adopt new technology from a set of new vendors.” “This year is a transitional time for the feeder line sensor market,” Markides observed. “New suppliers are taking share away from traditional sensor suppliers, through product offerings which are future-proofed, easily upgradeable, and more dependable and accurate at detecting faults on overhead lines than legacy FCIs.” According to the report, the total market is expected to grow from over $200 million in 2012 to $340 million in 2018. The new generation of smart grid sensors will account for almost $250 million, a 5-fold increase from 2012 to 2018. This report confirms that North America is the world’s premier market for smart grid technologies due to a convergence of severe weather, aging infrastructure, increased interest in green technologies, and inefficient power balancing, all of which are driving investments in the next generation of smart grid sensors that have combined communications and software analytics into a turnkey, affordable package for utilities. This is leading to the emergence of a new and rapidly growing market for smart grid sensors.

Tollgrade’s LightHouse® Medium Voltage (MV) sensors and predictive grid? analytics software provide real-time grid intelligence from the blind spot of the grid—the distribution network— to help utilities avoid outages, modernize and protect this major asset. Tollgrade’s smart grid sensors and software are deployed at many of the top electric utilities in the US and around the world. They are lightweight, easy to install and provide immediate real-time data about grid conditions. Unlike first-generation fault indicators, LightHouse sensors are inductively powered, do not require a battery and can provide real-time visibility down to three amps. The sensors work seamlessly with LightHouse predictive grid analytics software to provide the ideal combination of real-time load and power quality monitoring with outage and fault detection. Because the sensors are software-defined, utilities can customize the system to alert to inefficient operating conditions and power quality problems, load imbalances, and technical loss. These events are linked to map-view displays that make it easy for utilities to pinpoint the locations of problems for quick response and resolution. The LightHouse platform easily integrates with Data Historians, SCADA, OMS, and DMS systems or can run as its own stand-alone solution hosted by Tollgrade or within a utility’s own datacenter.
