FCC Grants Authorization for Use of Time Division Duplex Equipment in Upper 700 MHz A Block Licenses Held by Access Spectrum

BETHESDA, Md. --(Business Wire)--

Access Spectrum LLC, which holds wireless spectrum licenses in the Upper 700 MHz A Block covering two-thirds of the United States, today announced that the Federal Communications Commission has granted authorization for the use of time division duplex (TDD) equipment within this spectrum band. This decision confirms that TDD equipment, which uses a single frequency for both transmission and reception, can be deployed in full compliance with FCC (News - Alert) regulations in the Upper 700 MHz A Block.

By complying with these rules and through the careful design that has gone into its development, TDD equipment can be deployed in the A Block without causing harmful interference to devices in neighboring portions of the spectrum. These developments are crucial steps in showing that enterprises can use the A Block for productive, innovative applications through the secondary spectrum market.

"The FCC's authorization for the use of TDD equipment marks an important milestone in the development of the Upper 700 MHz A Block," said Michael Gottdenker, Chairman and Chief Executive of Access Spectrum (News - Alert). "This approval demonstrates that the equipment complies with the regulatory technical rules that apply to the A Block. The development of this equipment helps to illustrate the wide range and variety of technologies that can be deployed by technology companies, critical infrstructure enterprises, and government entities that are in need of wireless spectrum to deploy any number of cutting edge technologies - from machine to machine communications to smart grid applications, from hospital and health care connectivity to high-quality data processing."

The FCC's authorization for Type Acceptance was issued following the completion of a field test conducted in Vienna, Va. in March 2013, additional laboratory testing in the fall of 2013, and submission of documentation by Access Spectrum and Full Spectrum, the industry leader in fourth generation wireless coverage and a TDD technology supplier.

"We are thrilled that the FCC has confirmed that Full Spectrum's TDD equipment can operate in accordance with the technical rules governing the Upper 700 MHz A Block,"┬ásaid Stewart Kantor (News - Alert), Chief Executive Officer, Full Spectrum. "We welcome the possibility of working with the growing number of innovative companies who are seeking greater access to available spectrum to develop and bring to market new products and services."

The A Block, consisting of one megahertz paired, is an unencumbered portion of the 700 MHz band of the wireless spectrum that offers coverage to all 52 major economic areas (MEAs) in the country. Often referred to as the spectrum equivalent of "beach front property," the A Block offers superior signal penetration and broad wireless coverage at a lower cost than other spectrum bands.

A growing number of innovative technology companies are seeking greater access to licensed and unlicensed spectrum to develop and bring to market new products and services that place an increasing reliance on the airwaves. The licenses within the A Block can be used for a number of cutting-edge technologies, both those already in use and those just beginning to come to market. Applications for this spectrum could be useful across industries, including social and media platforms, automotive, financial transactions, oil and gas, smart grid/smart home, transportation, and telematics.
