Sonus Networks Announces Support for Key HD Voice Codec to Interconnect Voice Endpoints and Services

Sonus Networks, a dealer in next-generation IP-based network solutions, announced support for several key HD Codec in order to seamlessly interconnect different HD endpoints and services. By supporting key HD codec, Sonus is also enabling a significant percentage of the market to immediately offer this service to their subscribers.

The addition of HD voice functionality is stated to be the latest in software updates to Sonus’ GSX9000 High-Density Media Gateway (News - Alert), NBS5200 Network Border Switch, and PSX products. It is supposed to enable seamless interworking between HD Voice codec deployed by service providers for unified HD Voice service.

Sonus believes that the true potential of IP-based voice communication has not been realized so far because of the narrowband voice technology in use today. HD voice promises to change the consumer experience with VoIP communication by offering clear, vibrant and life-like conversations.

Joe McGarvey, principal analyst at IP Services Infrastructure commented that like many early technologies, HD Voice has been hampered by vendors using different codecs for their equipment without any transcoding support in the network. This has kept most people from using the service, as it restricted who they could reach in HD. It's basically like buying an HDTV that can only get HD video on a few channels. As the industry works toward a standard HD Voice codec, Sonus' new HD Voice transcoding, combined with the company's installed base, takes the technology a giant step forward.

Current deployments enable subscribers to communicate in HD with other people who are on the same HD network creating many fragments of HD voice users that hurdles the wide adoption of this technology. Different networks deploy various kinds of codec and even a HD call is transferred to another network it is transcoded to another codec and its quality degrades. By passing through HD calls without transcoding, or by properly transcoding between different HD codecs, Sonus keeps call quality high. The company’s HD Voice is also capable of intelligently reordering the codec when setting up SIP sessions to align them with the end points of the call, and supports sessions that involve a mix of HD and non-HD endpoints, such as conference calls.

David Tipping, vice president of marketing and product management at Sonus Networks (News - Alert) explained that users are beginning to expect high-quality, cross-network conversations to any device – from a Skype (News - Alert) client to 3G smartphone or IP phone at an enterprise – just as they expect high-quality TV pictures. By including a unified HD Voice solution in a simple software upgrade, Sonus is hoping to accelerate its adoption and make its benefits widely available.
