Silicon Labs Introduces Most Advanced SLIC Solution for VoIP Gateways

Silicon Laboratories (News - Alert) Inc, a leader in high-performance, analog-intensive, mixed-signal ICs, announced the introduction of the industry's most integrated, lucrative and power-efficient subscriber line interface circuit (SLIC) solution for voice-over-Internet Protocol (VoIP) gateways. The new solution, Si3226x Dual ProSLIC(R), delivers the minimum bill of materials and board area and the lowest power expenditure among the dual SLICs available. The Si3226x family provides a perfect solution for low-channel-count VoIP customer premises equipment.

FTTx deployment, according to Global Industry Analysts, is anticipated to grow to 183.9 million subscribers by 2015, with over 80 percent of the roll-out taking place in Asia. The requirement of higher bandwidth to sustain IPTV and video-on-demand services, rising demand for bundled voice/data/video services and aggressive plans to improve copper networks to fiber-optic cable are driving the expansion of the FTTx gateway market. Silicon Labs' Si3226x Dual ProSLIC family is designed precisely to help shrink the cost and intricacy of these gateways.

FTTx and other VoIP gateway makers are challenged to fit the functionality demanded by subscribers into tiny, reasonably priced system designs. This challenge is met by the Si3226x SLICs by providing two comprehensive channels in a tiny package. The Si3226x devices, which are the tiniest dual foreign exchange station (FXS) solution available, allows the lowest BOM cost and smallest footprint per channel for multiline gateways, comparatively even smaller than some quad- and octal-channel FXS solutions.

In a release, vice president and general manager of wireline products for Silicon Laboratories, Carlos Garcia, said that "Silicon Labs continues to drive innovation in the mixed-signal telephony IC market by increasing on-chip integration, reducing power consumption, and shrinking BOM cost and component count with sophisticated dual SLIC designs. The Si3226x ProSLIC family is precisely what manufacturers need to develop the next generation of small-footprint, feature-rich and energy-efficient VoIP gateway designs."

The Si3226x family is the premier FXS solution in the industry, having an integrated level shifter/driver that enables a direct connection to a dc-dc converter's power transistor regardless of the input voltage. This novelty removes the need for the MOSFET pre-drive circuit that is needed by competing SLIC designs, significantly sinking the cost and footprint of a two-channel design.
