ITEXPO Video: The Death of the PSTN?

The proliferation of VoIP technology throughout the commercial and residential segments introduced a significant challenge for the PSTN. Now that there is an uptake in mobile VoIP, the demand is far outpacing the need for the PSTN and its death appears imminent.

To get the inside scoop on one VoIP service provider making waves in this space, TMCnet’s Juliana Kenny talked with Louie Holmes II, president and CEO of Mix Networks (News - Alert). The interview took place at this year’s ITEXPO West 2011 event in Austin, TX and was captured in this video.

Holmes noted Mix Networks is a big fan of the show and has been faithfully attending for a few years now. They specifically came in early to see a lot of their vendors that are providing services for them, and viewed many of the technologies that are driving the death of the PSTN.

Mix Networks is a small VoIP service provider based in Lakeland, Florida.  The company offers a range of solutions from IP Centrex to SIP Trunking, among other services. Mix Networks sees itself as a “niche player” in the industry.

According to Holmes, “we don’t go after the mass market, but largely concentrate on vertical marketing applications.” Within the past year, the company has acquired shared tenant service as well.

Another focus for Mix Networks is the call center.  Holmes explained that the company helps call center businesses with DID origination and FTC (News - Alert) regulatory compliancy.

Holmes emphasized Mix Networks as a niche business, addressing the hard-to-meet-needs clients. “We are the guerilla warfare of the VoIP business.” Holmes stressed they usually find that through the agent channel, agents will bring them the stuff that no one else wants to do .

As for challenges, “they make the business fun – there are a lot of solutions out there that will be able to answer the regulatory challenges.” Frustrations with regulatory issues are common. For Mix Networks, the company is growing and,” the world is our oyster when it comes to this industry. There will always be the big guys…but we’re small enough and under the radar enough that we can succeed.”
