Vertical Updates Wave IP, Adds Disaster Recovery Solution

Vertical's Wave IP 2.5 embeds Wave Live Image, an affordable disaster recovery solution for SMBs that is license-activated for simple, fast system recovery. The disk imaging capability stores a copy of the system hard drive either locally or off-site; recovery is accomplished by simply plugging in a USB stick after a server failure to get the system up and running in minutes. Vertical also changed to a solid state drive for the core Wave IP PBX (News - Alert) to improve reliability and speed and offers a new five-year warranty with advance replacement.

Vertical Communications’ Wave IP is the company’s lead telephony system for the small and mid-sized business (SMB) market and larger distributed organizations. Vertical sells two versions of the system, Wave IP 500 (10-50 users) and the Wave IP 2500 (30-500 users) with edition-based licensing for 50 users/phones (Wave Standard Edition license), 200 users/phones (Wave Professional Edition license) and 500 users/phones (Wave Enterprise Edition license). Both versions deliver the same functionality and applications, but target different markets. Wave IP 500, introduced in 2009, has a lower price point that is more affordable for smaller, cost-sensitive businesses, while the larger Wave IP 2500, introduced in 2007, is suitable for small- to mid-sized businesses and larger distributed organizations.

Wave IP incorporates the company’s “Applications Inside” architecture that embeds basic applications, while more advanced applications are enabled with simple license key activation. Wave IP represents the integration of product lines following the merger years ago of four telephony vendors (Artisoft, Vertical Networks, Comdial and Vodavi) into one company, now known as Vertical Communications (News - Alert).

What’s New?

Vertical has changed to a solid state drive for the core Wave IP PBX to improve reliability and speed and offers a new five-year warranty with advance replacement. The latest Wave ISM 2.5 eases some administrative items and adds additional SIP carriers (Verizon and Broadsmart (News - Alert) are new), but perhaps most significant to SMBs is Wave Live Image, a disaster recovery solution that is license-activated for simple, fast system recovery. This OEM disk imaging capability (patented disk imaging technology from Acronis) stores a copy of the system hard drive either locally or off-site per a user-defined schedule that can be daily, weekly, monthly or other frequency. Recovery is accomplished by simply plugging in a USB stick after a server failure to get the system up and running in minutes. As an embedded, license-activated capability, Wave Live Image removes the challenge and complexity of system recovery and provides SMBs with a simple, affordable solution if and when equipment fails.

Wave IP 2.5 builds upon a major release 2.0 in 2010 that added several embedded, license-activated applications for ViewPoint users (ViewPoint is the company’s desktop call management client included with no license required), including Wave Impulse for sending instant messages to other ViewPoint users and Wave Mobile Extension that allows an external phone (such as a cell phone, home phone or legacy PBX phone) to operate as a Wave extension. Version 2.0 also introduced new hardware, namely the Dual-Core Vertical Application Module (VAM) that enables the system to scale to 500 users (up from 350), dual redundant hard disk drives for Wave IP 500 servers and additional telephone support for legacy digital models and the newer Edge 5000i SIP phones.

Vertical Wave 2.5 is available now as a software upgrade for current customers running Wave 2.0 or higher.
