Tigo Tanzania, a telecom operator in Tanzania and a subsidiary of Millicom International Cellular (News - Alert), has just unveiled voice-based value added services.

Officials with Tigo Tanzania said that the company’s Voice SMS, a unique non-obtrusive and easy-to-use service and the first of its kind in the country, is geared towards addressing the unique needs of new-age consumers.

In order to power the new Voice SMS technology, the company has selected Kirusa.

Kirusa (News - Alert) is a global developer of mobile social media and value added services, enabling mobile subscribers to reach out to their family and friends. Kirusa's solutions include the hugely successful Voice SMS service which is looked upon as being the world's most advanced Voice SMS solution and is used by over 30 carriers around the world.

Thanks to Kirusa’s Open Multimodal Platform, Tigo would now be able to offer a wide portfolio of g value added services to its entire subscriber’s base.

According to company officials, Voice SMS allows Tigo subscribers to send messages by voice, eliminating the need to type. Additionally, the solution enables subscribers to communicate faster with much greater ease as well as convey emotions, compared to the limitations of text messaging which allows only limited display of characters.

"We are happy at the initial response from our mobile customers to the limited release of Kirusa's Voice SMS service. As we expand the roll out of Kirusa Voice SMS service in coming days at very affordable tariffs, we are certain to generate an enthusiastic response,” said Marcelo Aleman, managing director at Tigo Tanzania, in a statement.

Aleman said that the robust platform from Kirusa has been crucial to the successful launch of Voice SMS at Tigo.

Taranjit Singh Batra, vice president of sales at Kirusa, added that Tigo has been a true partner and “their proactive support has made a tremendous difference and we expect to extend the partnership to deliver several more mobile services to Tigo customers."
