Communications technology company Spirent (News - Alert) announced today that it has entered into a deal to acquire Mu Dynamics (News - Alert), Inc., a company that pioneered security testing to aid deployments of cloud applications and applications-aware networks.
“Combining Mu's software-based applications and security testing capabilities with Spirent's market-leading performance test platforms will enable us to rapidly create best-in-class security test solutions with higher performance and greater scale than any other provider,” says Bill Burns, Spirent’s CEO. “This acquisition aligns with our strategy of delivering profitable growth through expanding our capabilities in growing and emerging technology markets.”
Mu developed the industry’s first solution capable of emulating real application traffic while at the same time generating comprehensive security threats. This capability addresses all elements of the development lifecycle and helps to ensure that cloud-based applications are protected from growing numbers of new security threats.
“Mu has built a powerful software solution set for our customers, enabling them to test security and application-aware networks,” said Dave Kresse (News - Alert), CEO of Mu Dynamics. “We're excited that this transaction will accelerate the global deployment of our solutions, and enable their integration into Spirent's leading performance test solutions.”
With the acquisition, Spirent expects to consolidate between $9 and $10 million and between $17 and $19 million in 2013. Spirent did not say what would happen to Mu employees as a result of the acquisition.
Product-wise, Spirent plans to both support and enhance Mu’s portfolio of products with its global reach that extends into Europe and Asia. Spirent’s native product line will also be accelerated by the integration of Mu’s differentiated capabilities into Spirent’s performance testing platforms.
“Infrastructure security testing is critical to ensuring confidence in the use of globally-deployed networks and applications,” noted Burns. “Mu Dynamics brings additional market-leading expertise in cyber security, usability and application emulation to the Spirent solutions portfolio.”
Spirent expects to deploy new solutions to governments, equipment manufacturers, enterprises, service providers and end users to help them to improve their cyber-security. The acquisition is expected to become final on April 23.
