Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is a method of using a high-speed Internet connection in order to bring voice calls from one place to another. The practice has significantly decreased the cost of long distance and international callers.
With VoIP currently a hot topic and a less expensive option for both home and business users, a surprising number of companies are joining in. The latest company to throw its hat into the ring is MWEB, who just this week announced the launch of its newest product, MWEB Talk.
The company is offering the service to its existing customers in South Africa. Existing users will simply be able to download an app, register it and begin making calls.
The system will work with free calling from any MWEB customer to another MWEB customer. Calls made on VoIP that are international are billed to the customer at a discounted rate. The company did not release any direct rate information with the new service announcement.
On the company's site, there are apps listed for iPhone, Android, BlackBerry and Nokia (News - Alert) smartphones. There is also an app for the popular iPad tablet, which would allow for calls with the built in microphone.
"It is our mission to deliver an online experience that‘s fast, simple, reliable and tailored to the needs of each customer – whether you are a home or a business user,” MWEB officials explained. “We’re always on the hunt for innovative ways to make our customers’ lives easier and more enjoyable. That’s why we currently serve more than 320,000 South African users through our MWEB Consumer and MWEB Business divisions."
