VoIP Continues to Change with the Times

Both residential and business VoIP are continuing to expand rapidly. And SIP trunking services are being adopted by more businesses by the day, with revenue increasing by a pretty significant 128 percent from 2010 to 2011 alone.

Hosted PBX (News - Alert) and unified communications service revenue also increased by 33 percent during this time period. Why the huge migration to VoIP? A myriad of reasons, including being better able to collaborate with geographically separated divisions of any large enterprise, ramping up efficiency and reducing costs.

Driving productivity is also a major factor companies that are leveraging next-generation communications remain mindful of.

Sold at affordable price points and extremely useful to people, many organizations are jumping head first to the quickly filling VoIP pool.  As in many situations, networks can become overburdened by the amount of data being transferred and some interruptions can occur including latency or jitter, VoIP providers must control the quality of service of the Internet in order to meet increasing customer demands.

Additionally, VoIP-based devices give users the ability to provision them, manage them and deploy them at a massive scale, Sherman Scholten (News - Alert), vice president of Marketing, Obihai Technology, recently told TMCnet.

With everything, change happens slowly. Yet it definitely happens and the BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) trend is exploding right now, forcing the connection types to VoIP to adjust.

“So, Voice over IP is so reliable now and the Internet is so reliable now that people are confident enough to go out and buy a device that’s really not associated with any particular service provider because they now know that they don’t have to get one service from a specific provider,” Scholten added. “Instead, the user can go to a VoIP provider and bring their own service of choice to their device.”
