idcloak Provides Proxy List for Circumventing Skype Bans

Sadly, not everyone thinks unified communication is a good thing. Some see it as a threat and attempt to block it, such as governments blocking Skype (News - Alert). Fortunately, idcloak Technologies has released a SOCKS proxy list, which can be used to access Skype even when the service is blocked.

Until now, accessing Skype in countries where it’s blocked requires VPNs, which can be either expensive or come with annoying advertisements. The proxy list from idcloak, however, is free and provided to and by the public. As Skype natively supports SOCKS proxy usage, it’s easy to use for pretty much anyone.

The list includes filter parameters, so users can search by country, speed and port number. Users can copy the IP address and port number they want, then paste it into the Skype settings, which will then send communications through the remote proxy. That will let it connect to Skype’s servers, avoiding any web filters that would block it.

“Thirty-two countries around the world currently block access to Skype at some level or another,” said Gill-Chris Welles, the censorship circumvention specialist of idcloak. “In most cases, Skype communications are inhibited so that the local government can secure a monopoly for domestic telecommunications companies. In others, it’s about political control. But as long as there is Internet access in that country, our proxy list will allow its netizens to reach Skype’s servers without the need for third-party software.”

I don’t think I have to argue against censorship. Blocking communication blocks the voices of the people, and is simply not right on many levels. That’s really the only way I can put it; it doesn’t matter if it’s for political control, communication control, or just a power trip, there’s no justification for stopping citizens from communicating. If the people want to Skype, then let them use Skype.

As such, idcloak is doing a great deed by creating and releasing this list. It’s easy to use, and provides an effective way to work around any bans that may be in place. If you do live in a country where the government is blocking Skype, don’t be silenced; there’s always a way to speak.
