Today, providers of interconnected VoIP services must obtain numbers through conventional telephone companies acting as a middleman. But times have changed and this process is believed to increase expenses and slow introduction of innovative services. So, an alternate system is needed.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC (News - Alert)) recently selected Millicorp to participate in a six-month technical trial of the direct provision of telephone numbering resources to VoIP providers. 

FCC issued a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) Order, and Notice of Inquiry Order in this regard.

In April, FCC offered a select group of VoIP providers an opportunity to participate in a technical trial of the provision of direct access to telephone numbers. With this trial, FCC seeks to examine whether VoIP providers should be offered .direct access to telephone numbers on a permanent basis.

Millicorp's application in this regard was granted a trial on June 19, 2013. According to the company, this order by FCC looks to modernize its rules for today’s broadband marketplace. This proposal also promotes competition and safeguards users and facilitates public safety.

The FCC is also inviting comments on easing access for other services that need numbers. They include home security systems, IP access to emergency services, programmable appliances, text messaging services and telematics like hands-free cellular modems in automobiles.
