Tatara Systems, Airvana to Demo SIP-Based Femtocell Convergence Solution
By Anshu Shrivastava, TMCnet Contributing Editor
Tatara Systems has announced that it will be demonstrating its session initiation protocol (SIP)-based femtocell convergence solution with Chelmsford, Mass. based Airvana this week.
The demonstration is expected to utilize the Tatara Convergence (News - Alert) Server (TCS), a SIP based application server to focus on an all-IP approach to femtocell integration and the Airvana HubBub code division multiple access (CDMA) femtocell.
The TCS solution enables the interconnection of femtocells and other advanced technology IP-based radio network elements with the legacy macro network. Company officials said that this provides a full mobile voice, messaging and data experience in an IP environment supporting both voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) and IP multimedia system (IMS) networks.
In addition to authentication of the mobile subscribers, handoff between femtocells and the macro network, the TCS capabilities also include emergency and supplementary services.
Additionally, it’s also capable of delivering new IP-based applications to existing mobile handsets without modifying or disrupting the macro network. The TCS is available in a CDMA or GSM/UMTS (News - Alert) variant.
Tatara is reportedly the first vendor to deliver a SIP-based solution for femtocell network integration, while Airvana (News - Alert) is said to have pioneered the use of SIP/IMS technology in CDMA2000 femtocells.
“Our HubBub CDMA is the only femtocell in the market to support both 1xRTT voice and EV-DO mobile broadband data” said Sanjeev Verma (News - Alert), vice president of femtocell business and co-founder of Airvana.
He said that combined with the Tatara Convergence Server, the company is delivering a full range of mobile services with improved performance for users indoors.
