xG Technology's xMax Mobile Technology Ushers In Use of Free or Unlicensed Spectrum for Cellular Use

There is an ever increasing amount of traffic being carried over the nation’s airwaves and the head of the Federal Communications Commission believes it will be necessary to make better use of these airwaves.

To this point, cell phone conversations have required the use of licensed airwaves. In essence, these airwaves have cost carriers billions of dollars in order to function correctly. There are now advances in technology that have produced mobile devices capable of handling cell phone conversations that use free airwaves.

These devices are designed to avoid the high cost of access to the airwaves and save money by placing the calls across the Internet instead of relying on the traditional telephone networks. Such devices also add capacity to the nation’s overloaded cellular infrastructure.

One company that is working to make these devices available and accessible is xG Technology. xG has deployed and is operating a mobile demonstration network currently in Ft. Lauderdale, FL.

Rick Mooers (News - Alert), CEO and board chair said in a statement, “We have developed a new technology that bypasses the traditional cell phone networks to bring lower calling costs to the market. This disruptive technology is going to shake things up a bit. While some may not want it to see the light of the day, xG’s xMax mobile network offers the only viable alternative to existing incumbent networks.”

The contrast that the xG model presents is heightened when you compare the zero cost spectrum to the $4.7 billion that Verizon (News - Alert) recently spent to obtain nationwide licensed spectrum just in the 700MHz, Block C auction.

Verizon also absorbs – or passes on to its customers – the cost of the towers, base stations and any other necessities associated with deploying the system. The xMax network presents a solution at a mere fraction of the cost of traditional cellular systems by making better use of unlicensed spectrum future.

The xMax all-IP network is designed from the ground up to use either free unlicensed and licensed spectrum. As a result, the company is creating the opportunity to cause a major shift in investment, business models and services in the overall cellular industry.

xG announced the deployment of field testing for the xMax system in June. The company started deploying base stations and field testing began by local carriers. A contract with Swiss-based Treco International will enable local carriers to lease equipment instead of buying it, generating significant cuts in capital expenses.

While a looming crisis in spectrum usage was outlined by FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski due to the increase in demand for wireless data, xG Technology (News - Alert) has the potential solution. As the company continues to drive recognition for its xMax network, carriers will start to pay attention as consumers continue to demand lower costs.
