The Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agency within the U.S Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has awarded a $30 million contract to Motorola Solutions business to strengthen border security operations along the world's largest open access point using Motorola’s (News - Alert) Astro 25 land mobile radio (LMR) P25 communications system upgrades on the northern U.S. border. All the equipment and technology required for the deployment, as well as services and support will be included within $30 million contract.

Using secure voice and data communications connectivity, the upgraded system will setup CBP border agents to check point officers and monitor agency aircraft along 1,200 miles of continuous U.S. border spread over 20,000 sq. miles of operating area. CBP’s mission is to leverage Motorola’s Astro 25 LMRs to ensure radio security, federal law enforcement and multi-agency interoperability, GPS location, as well as other required radio data capabilities.

Under the terms of the agreement, delivery, installation and P25 radio network technology will all be handled by Motorola exclusively. In addition, Point-to-Point wireless IP backhaul optimization and civil deployment across 50 remote radio frequency tower sites will also be taken care of by Motorola over the two-year contract period.
