Cavium Networks Debuts New NITROX III Security Processors

By Nathesh, TMCnet Contributor

Cavium Networks, a provider of highly integrated semiconductor products, announced that they have released the new NITROX III family of security processors. The single chip NITROX III family with 16 to 64 cores is designed to offer unmatched performance, 10 times greater than alternative multi-chip solutions within the same power envelope.

According to the company, NITROX III processors are highly scalable and deliver performance ranging from five Gbps to 40 Gbps for full IPsec protocol or SSL offload, 1024bit exponent RSA (News - Alert) from 35K to 200K RSA operations per second, and 2048bit exponent RSA up to 35K RSA operations per second enabling an optimal solution for applications, such as WAN optimization, cloud computing, integrated Firewall appliances and many more.

NITROX III security processor family integrates 16 to 64 purpose-built security RISC cores with high performance compression engines and virtualization hardware with a PCI (News - Alert)-Express Gen 2 interface. Their high performance characteristic enables OEMs to realize extremely high levels of rich, secure services, all with very low power consumption. They are also independent of external memory making them consume minimum cost, power and real-estate.

NITROX III products are software compatible with the Cavium NITROX PX and NITROX Lite family of security processors. The company claimed that the new processor family brings together the highest performance cryptographic acceleration with the latest security algorithms, GZIP & LZS compression and virtualization support.

"The NITROX III product line has received tremendous positive response and commitment from several Tier-1 customers in data-center, service-provider and WAN optimization areas," said Rajiv Khemani, VP and general manager of the Networking and Communications Division from Cavium Networks (News - Alert), in a press release. "With the unabated increase in security performance requirements, along with the increased need for WAN optimization and cloud virtualization, we are confident that the NITROX III processor will deliver a significant boost to the security processor market."

The new processors are expected to sample in Q2 2011 with design collateral for early customers available in Q4 2010 and will be available in five Gbps, 10 Gbps, 20 Gbps and 40Gbps options. SSL SKU options include 50K SSL Ops/sec, 100K SSL Ops/sec and 200K SSL Ops/sec.
