Detroit Water and Sewerage Department to use the Unidirectional Security Gateways of Waterfall Security

By Calvin Azuri, TMCnet Contributor

Detroit Water and Wastewater Department (DWSD) has successfully installed numerous Waterfall Security Gateways of Waterfall Security Solutions to secure its process control network.

In a release, Lior Frenkel, Waterfall Security's co-founder and CEO, said that, "Detroit Water is the vanguard in the Water industry to recognize the importance and value of keeping their critical assets inaccessible from any external network. We are honored to have such a technology and cyber security leader as part of our growing customer base within US critical infrastructures and utilities.”

Waterfall's security gateways that were installed include Waterfall for OSIsoft PI and several solutions for File Transfer. The patented cyber security solutions will help Utilities and Critical Infrastructures to provide secure connection between DWSD’s critical industrial networks and external networks.

This will ensure the security of DWSD’s business by preventing exposure of DWSD’s networks to threats of hacking, cyber-attacks and cyber terror from external networks. The cyber security solutions of Waterfall will help Utilities and Critical Infrastructures to comply with best practices, cyber-security policies, and regulations and standards including NRC, NERC (News - Alert)-CIP, and CFATS.

PJ Dada, assistant director of DWSD's Information Technology, Systems Integration and Operations Group (ITSIO) said that, “In order to leverage and share process control data in real-time, we recognized the need to greatly enhance our security posture. We looked for a cyber-security solution which will provide our critical environments the highest security level, while retaining our operational needs and functionalities. Waterfall Security answered both those requirements. Another main advantage of this security solution was the robust and comprehensive integration that Waterfall has done with the OSIsoft PI platform.”

The City of Detroit Water and Sewerage Department owns and manages several facilities for the producing and distributing potable water. The facilities also collect and treat wastewater. It caters to around 4 million people in southeastern Michigan, providing an average of 610 million gallons of water daily.

In other news, NitroSecurity (News - Alert), Inc., the leader in high-performance, content-aware security information and event management solutions (SIEM), and Waterfall Security Solutions recently announced the integration of the NitroView SIEM portfolio and Waterfall's Unidirectional Security Gateways. The integration combines absolute physical layer security with full enterprise-wide security monitoring and management, including SCADA and process control systems that are otherwise "invisible" to IT security monitoring solutions.
