Fortinet (News - Alert) is one of the leading network security providers of unified threat management (UTM) solutions. Griffith University is one of the largest institutions in the Asia-Pacific region. For several years, Fortinet has partnered with Griffith University to deploy its multi-threat appliances. Since the institution’s network increases rapidly it decided to upgrade to Fortinet’s FortiGate-3951 and FortiWifi-50B appliances for antivirus protection and intrusion prevention. FortiWifi-50B appliances also support the university’s new 3G wireless project for antivirus, IPS and WAN acceleration.
For an in-depth protection of its wireless networks, Griffith University has redeployed the FortiGate3810, FortiGate-3600 and FortiGate-800 appliances. FortiAnalyzer-2000A appliance is deployed to manage and analyze all network traffic and scan the network for any leaks. This appliance can also monitor all data traversing the network and is capable of retaining several months of logs without having to rotate them.
At Griffith University, faculty, staff and students use the open network. Hence it is very critical to protect certain parts of the network like network perimeter, network core and the wireless network. The university has also conducted load testing and session ramp up test on FortiGate-3951 appliance and concluded that the appliance has met or exceeded the performance benchmarks set in its datasheets without any network performance degradation.
In a release, Gary Galbraith, principal network engineer at Griffith University said that, “During peak times of the day, the University sees 190,000 concurrent sessions and the FortGate's IPS functionally can handle it great. The Fortinet appliances are performing well. They work and don't require babysitting. They do their job.”
FortiGate-3951 appliance is deployed outside of the University's network to provide full denial of service, intrusion prevention and antivirus functionality and FortiGate-3810 appliance is deployed internally for denial of service protection. FortiGate-3810 and FortiGate-3600 appliances help to clean the wireless networks.
Kevin Dyson, regional director for Fortinet Australian and New Zealand said that, “Enterprises and institutions such as Griffith University are rapidly seeing the benefits of deploying a few or all security functionalities available in FortiGate appliances. By offering multiple functionalities within a single appliance, Fortinet allows its customers to pick and choose what is necessary for their individual network.”
