Astaro Enters Dedicated Mail Security Market

By Raju Shanbhag, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Astaro (News - Alert) Corporation has announced the availability of its newest product line, Astaro Mail Gateway, a high performance, low cost alternative for companies. The Astaro Mail Gateway (News - Alert) gives small- to medium-sized businesses comprehensive, easy-to-manage mail security with its features such as e-mail encryption, spam and virus protection and remote exchange access.

To improve the spam detection considerably, Astaro integrates patented, reputation-based filtering, unlike most mail security solutions that offer traditional anti-spam technologies. This also minimizes the misclassification of legitimate e-mails as spam. Apart from providing superior spam recognition, Astaro also blocks traffic in SMTP and POP3 e-mails by offering two parallel virus scanners in its mail gateway.

Reducing reaction time in the event of a new malware outbreak, the two scanners receive virus pattern updates independently of each other. The solution also provides protection against phishing attacks.

Astaro has remained at the forefront of adding new functionality to its security appliances as the only security vendor that provides e-mail encryption free with its mail gateway solution. Eliminating the need for employee action, Astaro’s e-mail encryption runs transparently at the gateway. As the solution removes individual employees from the encryption process, it lowers the possibility of confidential data accidentally being sent across the Internet. Astaro’s encryption also allows for scanning of encrypted e-mails for malware, which is based on recognized standards, such as S/MIME, OpenPGP, and TLS.

Mobile users can enjoy the benefits of the Astaro Mail Gateway while on the road with the help of remote access security. Astaro gives users Web-based access to their Exchange mailbox with their Outlook client from any location via a secure SSL-VPN connection. For both eDirectory and ActiveDirectory, all Astaro Mail Gateway models also include single sign-on.

The Astaro promotion will run through December 31, 2008, and provides all Astaro Mail Gateway and Astaro Web Gateway appliances at 50 percent off. Astaro Mail Gateway is available at a starting price of $499, through this promotion.

“The inclusion of superior protection against viruses, spam and phishing, as well as e-mail encryption and simple eDirectory/Active Directory integration in the entire family of products, means that SMBs will now be able to protect e-mail traffic just as well as larger corporations,” explains Jan Hichert, Astaro CEO. “With the launch of the Astaro Mail Gateway, our partners now have the ability to address very diverse security requirements and appeal to a wide range of customers.”
