Report: E-mail Security Appliances Market Growing Fast

By Jayashree Adkoli, TMCnet Contributing Editor

In a new market brief, “E-mail Security Appliances — Market Quadrant 2008,” The Radicati Group (News - Alert) identified some of the strengths and weaknesses of key players in the e-mail security appliance market.

Organizations have several options to protect themselves from spam (junk e-mail) and malware by using software solutions, appliances or managed services. Security appliances such as firewalls and virtual private networks (VPNs) are one way to guard against e-mail threats.

The Radicati Group segmented the e-mail security market into three distinct groups: e-mail security appliances, hosted e-mail security services, and e-mail security software products. Security appliances, the report said, held 25 percent of the total e-mail security market revenue. Security software held 62 percent and security hosted services held 13 percent. The report indicated that the e-mail security appliances segment is the fastest growing segment of the e-mail security market.

The Radicati Groups’ Market Quadrants ranked vendors in different categories to provide a competitive view of key players in the e-mail security appliances market. Rankings were split into four categories: mature players, specialists, trail blazers, and top players. The leading players in each market segment were ranked based on the features and functionality of their solutions and their market share in that segment.

Some of the companies that were evaluated in the report included Barracuda Networks (News - Alert), BorderWare, Clearswift, Fortinet, IronPort (Cisco), McAfee, Secure Computing, Sophos, Symantec, and Trend Micro.

The Radicati Group also recently released a related report, “Wireless Email Market, 2008-2012.”
