Symantec Debuts Brightmail Gateway 8.0

By Jai C.S., TMCnet Contributing Editor

Symantec (News - Alert) Corp., a provider of security, storage and systems management solutions reportedly has released its Brightmail Gateway (News - Alert) 8.0, a new messaging security platform that allows organizations to protect unstructured information.

Formerly known as Symantec Mail Security 8300 Series, the Brightmail Gateway 8.0 introduces new sender reputation technology and new management features that reduce risk and hands-on administration.

The launch comes is designed to extend the company’s approach to offer Information Risk Management solution.

“With spam messages continuing to grow in both sheer quantity and complexity, e-mail administrators need perimeter protection that brings them confidence by prioritizing their legitimate e-mail while starving spammers,” said Francis deSouza, senior vice president of Information Risk Management at Symantec.

“With Brightmail Gateway we’re declaring to customers that you can have both a scalable and an easy to use solution that catches more than 97 percent of spam while flagging less than one false positive in every million legitimate e-mails,” deSouza added.

Through its Adaptive Reputation Management, the new messaging security platform offers a unique approach that prioritizes e-mail from reputable senders while rejecting e-mail from spammers. The approach uses local reputation and Symantec’s spam sender reputation database enabling Brightmail Gateway to block up to 95 percent of spammers at the connection-level, the company says.

Brightmail Gateway leverages Symantec’s FastPass message processing approach that allows e-mail from known senders to escape from spam scanning entirely. Additionally, the new Bounce Attack Prevention feature signs outgoing messages in order to eliminate bounceback spam effectively.

The company says the installation of Brightmail Gateway is so simple and easy that it requires minimal monitoring and maintenance. In addition, Brightmail Gateway includes new wizards and default configurations to guide the installation process and implement best practices for deployment so that customers can send out information more quickly.

Symantec has also added summary diagnostics to the administrator console of Brightmail Gateway, which allows administrators to instantly evaluate the status of deployment.

Symantec Brightmail Gateway 8.0 will be available early next year, officials said.
