Munich Airport Selects Alcatel-Lucent IP-Based Video Surveillance Solution

By Raju Shanbhag, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Munich Airport will get a fully IP/MPLS-based video surveillance solution from Alcatel-Lucent. This closed-circuit television (CCTV) system with an initial total of 800 IP cameras from various manufacturers is expected to be useful for airport security, traffic control and fire departments.

Video surveillance is an integral part of airports all over the world. It streamlines airport operations and greatly reduces the burden on a security staff. Increasingly, airports are looking at establishing surveillance systems that will be helpful for their internal staff.

As Germany’s second largest airport, the Munich Airport will look to replace the previous analog system with a fully IP-based solution. The airport believes that this will provide enhanced security in the airport. This new technology will also support existing security technology such as smoke detectors and burglar alarms. It also allows swift responses as the security or rescue personnel and other operational units have instant access to relevant video images of various situations.

“We are delighted by the opportunity to demonstrate our expertise as system integrators to Munich Airport. Our goal is to meet the highest standards of flexibility, security and availability," said Alf Henryk Wulf, chairman of the management board of Alcatel-Lucent (News - Alert) Deutschland in Germany, noting the extensive experience the company gained in airport projects in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, and its work for Deutsche Bahn AG.

The new system from Alcatel-Lucent will offer support for cameras from different manufacturers provided by its flexible interfaces. This will allow the airport to opt for the best possible camera hardware for specific purposes and locations. The company will also link the video surveillance solution to other systems relevant to our operations such as fire alarm, security and traffic management systems, and security and rescue control centers.

The company's global Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX (News - Alert)) Center in Taiwan achieved several milestones in 2008. These achievements are expected to bring a strong 4G ecosystem in Taiwan. Through 4G, operators have access to a variety of infrastructure, devices and applications to support next-generation wireless services.
