LSI Intros Ethernet Functional Programming Interface 3.0

By Calvin Azuri, TMCnet Contributing Editor

LSI Corporation, a provider of silicon, systems and software technologies, reportedly has unveiled “Ethernet Functional Programming Interface Release 3.0,” a next-generation traffic management software for carrier-class Ethernet services.

The LSI Ethernet FPI 3.0 contains scalable features and functions for carrier-class Ethernet networks. This also includes wireless backhaul management tools for service classification, reliability and quality of service.

LSI’s solution also uses a single interface across the full range of LSI APP multicore processors. This enables OEMs to utilize a single application across a broad system portfolio, which reduces up-front R&D investment. The LSI APP platform is comprised of a multicore general-purpose processor and specialized programmable cores which provide packet processing, traffic management and security functions.

LSI Ethernet FPI 3.0 provides operations, administration and maintenance (OAM) and connectivity fault management (CFM) functions. Its programmable toolkit enables wireless service providers to provision guaranteed service levels, improve network reliability and reduce operating costs. Performance monitoring, link detection and network diagnostics will be accelerated on the LSI communications processor. System performance will improve since the bulk of OAM processing is offloaded from the host.

According to Bob Wheeler, senior analyst at The Linley Group, the shift in network infrastructure to carrier-grade Ethernet has caused service providers to demand a new set of network management tools. The latest Ethernet FPI from LSI will provide OAM acceleration and advanced traffic management capabilities needed by OEMs to deliver next-generation wireless backhaul products.

IP security encryption, decryption and public key acceleration are also supported by Ethernet FPI 3.0. Security processing occurs without any intervention from the host since true and pseudo random number generators are generated by the security engine embedded in the LSI communications processor. The in-service upgrade facility enables software upgradation with minimal impact on traffic flow. Link aggregation, L2/3/L4 forwarding and tunneling, VLAN and policy and priority remapping are the other standard features present in Ethernet FPI 3.0.

The Ethernet FPI 3.0 supports provider backbone bridging and transport applications. It also supports ITU-T G.8031 and G.8032 compliant automatic Ethernet protection switching. Compliant with MEF industry standards 6.1, 10.1 and 14, and IEEE (News - Alert) 802.1ag, IEEE 802.3ah and ITU-T Y.1731, LSI has demonstrated IEEE 1588v2 protocol stack integration on its APP3300 platform.
