Online Merchants Turn to VeriSign for Advanced Security Solutions

By Anshu Shrivastava, TMCnet Contributor

VeriSign, a provider of Internet infrastructure services for the networked world, said that online merchants Zappos.com, Newegg and Columbia Sportswear have deployed its advanced security solutions.

The deployment of VeriSign’s (News - Alert) advanced security solutions will reassure customers that they are shopping on authentic Web sites that they can trust.

With the addition of VeriSign EV SSL to these merchants Web sites, the businesses are safeguarding against phishing scams that lure unsuspecting consumers to sites designed to appear almost identical to genuine Web pages.

Saffet Ozdemir, information security officer at Zappos.com, said that it’s not enough to just provide customers with great selection and outstanding customer service, which is why “we also offer customers a pleasant and secure online shopping experience that they can trust.”

The privacy and security of customers are important and part of the customer service experience, said Ozdemir. “Hence the reason we selected VeriSign EV SSL Certificates.”

Tim Callan, vice president of product marketing at VeriSign, said that security and customer satisfaction are key components to build trust with the customers and keep them coming back. He added that VeriSign EV SSL assists online retailers by providing them with security and a globally recognized certificate that builds consumer confidence.

The green EV SSL security address bar can be displayed by over 65 percent of the browsers, including high security browsers such as the latest beta version of Internet Explorer 8 (IE8), Internet Explorer 7 (IE7), Firefox 3.0, Google (News - Alert) Chrome, Safari 4 and Opera 9.X.

Officials said that when an Internet user equipped with these browsers visit a site protected by EV SSL Certificates, the top of the browser lights up in green and displays the name of the company operating the Web site. The green glow assures the user that he has reached a site whose authenticity has been verified by a certificate authority such as VeriSign.

Also this week, TriCipher, a provider of Internet identity services, announced that it has integrated the VeriSign Identity Protection (VIP) Service to offer secure single sign-on and strong authentication for Google Apps with mobile one-time-password (OTP) credentials from VeriSign.
