VPN Functionality from Astro Corp Provides Remote Access to iPad Users

By Divya Narain, TMCnet Contributor

Wilmington, Mass.-based unified threat management provider Astaro Corporation has announced the VPN functionality of the Astaro Security Gateway (News - Alert) allows iPad users to securely connect to their business or home networks. Both the professional edition and the Essential Firewall and Home Use edition are equipped with this feature. What’s more, both these editions are available free of cost.

The Astaro (News - Alert) Security Gateway supports PPTP, L2TP, and IPSec VPN connections which allows it to establish secure tunnels with the iPad. Enterprises that are using the Astaro Security Gateway allow their employees to connect their iPad to their company’s network without having to purchase any new applications or networking equipment.

“The iPad demonstrates massive sales numbers and shows the strong consumer demand for this type of device, and businesses will have to face the issue of how employees can securely use it for business tasks while on the road,” said Gert Hansen, Vice President Product Management at Astaro. “Connecting to the network with the Astaro Security Gateway means employees can securely access network resources via their iPad. This feature is not reserved to Astaro customers as it is also included in the Essential Firewall edition that is free for business use.”

The Home Use edition of the Astaro Security Gateway allows private users to connect their iPad to their home networks without additional investment or specialized technical know-how.

“The iPad has a lot of great personal uses such as watching movies and TV using apps like AirVideo,” said Hansen. “With the Astaro Security Gateway Home Use edition, iPad users can access multimedia content on their home network wherever they have connectivity to the Internet – and for example watch their favorite series while waiting for their train to arrive.”

In similar news, TMCnet reported that Astaro Corporation allows users of Apple’s (News - Alert) iPhone to set up a secure, IPsec VPN tunnel.
