Video is a pervasive technology that is gaining more ground in the commercial space as businesses and other organizations are recognizing its value in terms of content delivery. With the demand for video applications growing, there is a need for better technologies to support this demand and deliver what users want in terms of quality and reliability.
To explore this concept more thoroughly, Carl Ford, M2M – community developer, spoke with Anatoli Levine (News
- Alert), director of Product Management for RADVISION, in the ITEXPO newsroom.
Much of the activity in video for Levine has been in the SIP video technology space. This platform is available in other protocols and the exploration of this development has been ongoing work that started almost two years ago.
Levine stressed that in SIP, each and every use has to have a profile. It is important to define best practices and a profile that will allow users to rely on the same SIP. Key focuses include how to control conferences, how to support dual stream video, the steps to take to implement video streaming and interoperability, and more. These are all technological focuses to make video work on the business network.
Levine and his group focus on building best practices profiles to allow anyone who deploys video communications to interoperate.
Voice over LTE (News - Alert) activity is the focus of the IMS Activity group. Levine is actively involved in this group and for the past year, it has focused on building a testing plant for this SIP video profile. The group recently attended Interop (News - Alert) in Sweden and conducted a number of tests to identify issues with the profiles.
New companies are now joining the IMS Activity group to participate in the development. Levine stressed that this group really needs strong participation from the carriers as this is the missing piece. Carriers need to play an advisory and marketing role to push the message down to the device manufacturers to implement the standard. AT&T and Orange (News - Alert) are the only ones actively involved and while they are important partners, more are needed.
IMTC (International Multimedia Telecommunications Consortium) is the IMS Activity group and Levine is encouraging others to get involved. Interested parties can visit www.imtc.org to join and get involved. According to Levine, anyone who is manufacturing communications equipment, media, VoIP and streaming should get involved.
The group is currently working on ITMC Round Table, a closed event that will bring together analysts, big users, CTOs and product people from member companies to continue to build the knowledge base. They will focus on determining how ITMC can help members in the industry to move forward, approaches to interoperability, and the benefits they can provide.
